Set on a compact inner-city site, the brief for this project was to create a modest extension to an existing Victorian workers cottage in South Melbourne. The design focuses on exploring multi-generational and compact living.
Our clients, a busy family of five, had lived in the area for years in a double fronted Victorian house, with no garden. When the property behind their house went up for sale, they saw an opportunity to purchase the site, to provide more space and create a home for their mother/mother-in-law/grandmother. The goal was to create a space that would allow for both family connection and independence. The shared back garden plays a pivotal role in this, providing a communal area where both homes can come together and enjoy time together, while still offering privacy and space when needed.
The material palette is soft and neutral, evoking a sense of calm amidst the bustling urban environment. Considered, efficient planning maximises light and functionality, making the most of every inch of space on the tight footprint.
The final result is a modern, efficient home that balances privacy with connection. The shared garden fosters an ongoing relationship between the two homes, creating a harmonious space where contemporary living and family bonds can coexist seamlessly.
