Hampden Specialist School (HSS) and Terang College were awarded $12M as part of the 20/21 State Budget. The project involved the consolidation of Hampden Specialist School and Terang Junior School onto the Terang Senior College campus.
The new junior school building for Hampden Specialist School (HSS) looked to replace the worn relocatable buildings and provide a calm and inclusive space for the students, staff and broader school community.
The building provides new administration and office areas, classrooms, student support spaces, multipurpose room, art room and maker spaces.
A key aspect of the design was to provide a building which responded to the specific needs of the students of HSS. The building siting and orientation looks to frame views out to the surrounding landscape and offer students the opportunity for regulation and respite.
Materials were intentionally selected to provide a calm, neutral and warm setting. The building is designed to foster a sense of inclusion and independence for its students by providing inclusive spaces which offer a range of teaching and support opportunities.
An accessible landscaped connection is provided across the entire site to allow Hampden Specialist School students to access all areas of the site and encourage cross collaboration and engagement with the students at Terang College.
